Blue-glazed jug
Clay. Syria. 3rd century A.D. Height 24.8
cm., rim diameter 14.1 cm. Collection of the Idemitsu Art Museum, Tokyo. This
piece has a large rim around the mouth, and the neck is wide and short, giving a
massive effect. The handle looks like two twisted ropes, and the lower end is
finished like three drooping petals. There are rivet-like decorative bosses
beside the top and lower attachments of the handle. The base is flat. Tripod
marks are seen on the base and the rim. The blue glaze of this excellent piece
is still bright.
