Mithradates II (c. 123 - 88 B.C.)

ΜΙΘΡΑΔΑΤΗΣ

Mithradates II was the eighth Parthian king. One of the greatest Parthian kings, he defeated all Seleucid attempts to reclaim their Eastern territories and made Parthia into a formidable, unified empire. He made contact with Rome and introduced new titles and designs on his extensive coinage. He adopted the title Epiphanes, "god manifest".

Late in his reign [Justin XLII.2.7], Mithradates II exerted his influence in Greater Armenia where he took as hostage the prince who was to become Tigranes the Great of Armenia.

Coins in the name of Arsaces attributed to Mithradates II

The attributions and cataloging of Parthian coins used throughout this web site follow David Sellwood's An Introduction to the Coinage of Parthia (1980, 2nd edition) for consistency. The few exceptions to this policy are explained here.

Sellwood Type 26

Sellwood (1980) classification disregards the length of beard on S24 to S26 drachms and considers all archer-on-throne reverses to be type 26. With very few exceptions, all types S26.10, .11, .16, .18 and .19 seen to date have medium length beards. When the change from S24 to S26 was made, there may have been S24 obverse dies on hand which continued in use. No study has been published to explain portrait differences on S26 coins.

Sellwood Type 28

Type 28 drachms are principally identified by the obverse tiara and torque designs. There is normally a griffin-ended torque on S28.1, 28.6 and 28.7 while others have a single or double pellet. The tiara usually has a six-pointed star on S28.1 through 28.4, but eight points on S28.5 through 28.7. However, there are several variants of these design elements.
