Abstract: Publication of a tetradrachm of debased silver recently discovered in Afghanistan, apparently in Badakhshan. The image of the ruler is copied from Indo-Greek coins, but his name is Iranian (the legend is probably to be interpreted as "Našten son of XšaØran"). The coin can be dated between c. 50 BC and c. 30 AD. It was issued by a local prince who ruled under the authority of the nomad conquerors, in a territory situated either north or south of the Hindukush, before the region was unified by the Kushan conquest. Abstract:
Exhibition: Lattes, Musée de Lattes, 2003. A series of essays exploring the cultural concurrence, convergence and melding of all aspects of the arts in the cross-roads of central Asia, between the Oxus (Amu Darya) and Indus rivers, illustrated with objects such as coins, sculptures, vases, manuscripts, gems and jewellery. From Alexander's invasion all the influences; Greco-Bactrian, Indo-Greek -Parthian & -Scythian, Kushan, Hephthalite (or White Hun), East-Sasanian and Gandharan are studied, as well as the Greek settlement of Ai Khanum, the Sogdia, the area of Begram (ancient Kapici) and other areas and aspects of Afghanistan.

Abstract: Hasard des recherches ou réalité ? [Publisher]
